What does "luong ngay" mean? Distinguishing 3 easily-confused senses

In Vietnamese, the same phrase "lương ngày" (daily pay) is understood by some as being paid every day, while others immediately think of an app to receive wages early. This very confusion makes many workers misunderstand their rights, and makes companies hesitant when drafting contracts and payslips.

The phrase "luong ngay" can be understood in three different senses: wages paid by the working day; the wage amount used to compute one day; or the Luong Ngay solution that lets workers receive early a portion of already-earned pay. All three relate to wages but differ in nature, computation and when the money is received.

Understanding each sense helps workers avoid mistaking their rights and helps companies build clearer contracts, payslips and benefit programmes. If you are new to the topic, you may first read What is Luong Ngay (daily pay)?.

1. "Luong ngay" as a form of paying wages by the working day

In the first sense, daily pay is the wage a company pays a worker for each working day.

The worker and the company agree an amount for one working day. The income for a pay cycle is determined mainly by the number of days the worker actually works, plus other valid additions and deductions.

For example:

  • Agreed rate: VND 350,000/day.

  • The worker works 24 days in the month.

  • Wages by working days: 350,000 × 24 = VND 8,400,000.

The example above does not yet include overtime, night work, allowances, bonuses, tax, insurance or other amounts, if any.

When is a daily-paid worker paid?

The pay cycle does not necessarily occur after each working day. Under Article 97 of the Labour Code 2019, a worker paid by the hour, day or week is paid after the hour, day or week worked; the parties may also agree to pay in a lump sum, but a lump-sum payment must be made at least once every 15 days.

Therefore:

> "Being paid by the day" refers to the basis for computing wages; it does not always mean the worker receives money at the end of each day.

2. "Luong ngay" as the wage amount for one working day

In the second sense, the worker may be on a monthly salary, but the company still needs to determine the wage amount corresponding to one working day.

This daily wage amount can be used to:

  • Compute wages by the actual number of working days.

  • Determine wages in certain cases of leave or work stoppage.

  • Serve as a basis for computing related amounts under regulations and company policy.

  • Explain details on the payslip.

Illustrative example:

  • The worker is on a monthly salary: VND 10,400,000.

  • The normal working days the company sets for that month: 26 days.

  • The illustrative daily rate: 10,400,000 ÷ 26 = VND 400,000/day.

This is a simple example to convey the idea. When computing actual wages, the company must rely on the labour contract, the pay regulations, working time and the applicable law.

Does the daily wage amount change a monthly-pay arrangement?

No. A company converting to a per-day amount for computation does not automatically turn a monthly-paid worker into a daily-paid one.

What must be determined is:

  • The agreed form of paying wages.

  • The wage stated in the labour contract.

  • The normal working days applied.

  • The purpose of the daily-rate conversion.

3. "Luong Ngay" as a solution to receive earned pay early

In the third sense, Luong Ngay is the name of a solution that lets workers receive early a portion of wages corresponding to working days already done and eligible, before the usual payday.

Internationally this model is usually called Earned Wage Access — EWA, which can be understood as accessing already-accrued wages.

For example:

  • The worker is on a monthly salary.

  • They have worked and had 10 days approved.

  • The system determines the eligible accrued wages.

  • The worker can actively receive early a portion within the permitted limit.

  • At the pay cycle, the amount received enters the reconciliation process to determine the remainder.

In this case, the worker can still be monthly-paid. Luong Ngay does not necessarily change the contract into a daily-pay form; the solution merely adds the ability to access early a portion of already-accrued pay.

Does Luong Ngay pay the entire salary every day?

No. This is the most easily confused point.

With the Luong Ngay solution, the company can still compute and pay the main wages monthly. The worker only receives early a portion of the accrued and eligible wages, not a full settlement of the salary right after each working day.

The amount available usually depends on:

  • Working days recorded and approved.

  • The provisionally computed accrued wages.

  • The safe ratio set by the system or the company.

  • The amount the worker has already received in the cycle.

  • The amounts to be reserved for end-of-cycle reconciliation.

Is Luong Ngay a wage advance?

Luong Ngay and a wage advance can both help workers receive money before the usual payday, but their operation may differ.

A traditional advance is usually done by a separate request, through several approval levels and manual processing. Luong Ngay is usually linked to timekeeping data, automatically determines the limit and lets the worker request actively within the range the company permits.

Article 101 of the Labour Code 2019 provides that the worker may receive a wage advance under conditions agreed by the two parties and without interest. However, when assessing a specific Luong Ngay/EWA solution, the company must still fully consider the contract, the source of funds, the reconciliation, service fees, data protection and the parties' responsibilities.

Why is it important to distinguish the three concepts correctly?

For workers

Distinguishing correctly helps a worker understand:

  • Whether they are paid by the day or by the month.

  • How the amount for one day is computed.

  • Whether receiving Luong Ngay increases total income.

  • How the amount received early affects the pay cycle.

  • The fees and conditions of using the solution.

For businesses

The company must use consistent terminology in:

  • The labour contract.

  • The pay regulations.

  • Timesheets and payslips.

  • Benefit-introduction materials.

  • The terms of use for the early-pay solution.

If it only writes "the company pays luong ngay" without explanation, workers may understand it as being paid the entire salary every day, whereas the company actually only provides the right to receive early a portion of accrued wages.

How to identify which "luong ngay" you mean

Use these three questions:

  1. Does the contract set wages by the day or by the month? If the wage is agreed per working day, this is a daily-pay arrangement.

  2. Is the company merely converting a monthly salary into a per-day amount for computation? If so, this is a daily wage amount used as a basis, which does not change a monthly-pay arrangement.

  3. Does the worker want to receive early the money from working days already done? This is the need for Luong Ngay/Earned Wage Access.

Conclusion

In short, "luong ngay" does not have only one sense. The phrase can mean a daily-pay arrangement, the wage amount for one working day, or a solution to receive early a portion of accrued pay. Knowing which sense you mean helps both workers and companies avoid needless misunderstandings about wages.

In Nhan Kiet's system, Luong Ngay is used in the third sense: helping workers actively receive a portion of wages from working days already done and eligible, before the usual payday. Interested companies can learn more at Luong Ngay for businesses.

FAQ

Does being paid by the day mean receiving money at the end of each day?

Not necessarily. The worker and the company may agree to pay in a lump sum within the pay-cycle limits set by law.

Can a monthly-paid worker use Luong Ngay?

Yes. Luong Ngay does not require the worker to switch to a daily-pay form. What matters is that the company deploys the solution, the working days are confirmed and the worker meets the conditions of use.

Does receiving Luong Ngay increase the total monthly wage?

No. The worker only changes when they receive a portion of already-accrued wages. The amount received is reconciled when the company computes end-of-cycle pay.

Why can the converted daily wage differ between months?

The normal working days of each month can differ. The computation also depends on the contract, the work schedule and the company's pay regulations.

Is Luong Ngay a loan?

It is not a loan; it is a Luong Ngay model that, in its true nature, is designed for workers to access already-accrued pay. However, one must look at the specific structure of each service — the source of funds, the contract, the fees and the parties' obligations — before concluding its legal nature. Is there any fee for using Luong Ngay?

This depends on each solution's policy; all fees must be clearly disclosed before the worker confirms the transaction. In particular, with Nhan Kiet's Luong Ngay, the worker pays no interest and no fee — the system only deducts exactly the amount withdrawn from that cycle's wages.
